Design Technology (DT)

Design and technology is an area of the curriculum in which the our children can develop a fascination for their technology-filled world. It involves designing, creating and evaluating innovative creations in real life contexts for a range of different purposes.
We view DT as an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, our children design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within avariety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
Design and Technology is a compulsory subject in the National Curriculum and, at
Halsnead, we teach it not only to develop the children’s subject knowledge but to
encourage: risk taking, communication, creativity and confidence in expressing
oneself. Our children will develop an understanding of design, food structures,
mechanisms, textiles and a range of materials whilst putting into practise
fundamental maths and literacy skills.

In EYFS, through a mixture of adult directed and child initiated activities, we teach our children to construct with a purpose in mind using a range of media and materials, choosing and using simple tools safely and with independence and finding ways of joining and assembling using different techniques. Throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2 our children will learn about healthy eating, where food comes from, how to prepare a range of dishes and how ingredients are grown. We aim to equip our children will the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive and overcome challenges in our ever-changing, modern world.
